Edward Gorey and the Performing Arts - Cartoon Art Museum

The Cartoon Art Museum hosts Edward Gorey and the Performing Arts, an exhibit of original artwork and ephemera created by celebrated author and artist Edward Gorey, on display from December 10, 2023 through March 10, 2024. Edward Gorey’s participation in the performing arts began in 1942, during his final year of high school, when the young artist designed costumes and sets for the senior class play at Chicago’s chic Francis W. Parker School. Later in life, no matter how high the demand for his work was, Gorey was generous in providing illustrations for posters and playbills, sometimes pro bono, for worthy productions. The Cartoon Art Museum’s latest in a series of Gorey spotlights, Edward Gorey and The Performing Arts, celebrates his contributions to stage and screen. Featured artwork selected by Cartoon Art Museum founder and Gorey enthusiast Malcolm Whyte includes a limited edition print entitled On Stage, created as a fundraiser for PBS; the original water-colored illustration depicting the fanciful circus family known as The Pedalling Palludinis; illustrations from the New York Metropolitan Opera's production Turandot; and the original poster artwork created for the Gorey-scripted and directed play Lost Shoelaces.
